John Cena1999年加入UPW.是由小联盟出来的摔角手。2002年6月进入WWE，当时还是很平实的造型，但是他的对手就很有分量。第一场他就对上Kurt Angal，跟着还有Chris Jerrico。2002年底，他和Bull Buchanan组成双打，他的hip-hop造型基本成形，虽然他已经崭露头角，但那时还不太显眼。不久后他与Rikishi不和，能用绝招对付这个超过300磅的对手，他开始吸引观众视线。
2003年，他回到个人发展，hip-hop形象更加深入民心。他在每次出场都用Rap侮辱对手，并有宣传语"You can t see me"，意思就是当Cena用Rap侮辱对手的时候，对手还没出场，只听到他的Rap，但却看不到他，可真是把对手气疯。而且他有了亲密的“战友”，就是脖子上的锁链，可以把它当作武器。
2003年4月，他在战胜多个对手，终于取得了向WWE冠军Brock Lesnar挑战的机会。虽然最终败北，但已经确定了他准一线摔角手的地位。跟着SmackDown!很多的顶尖对手都跟他交过手：Undertaker,Eddie Guerrero和Kurt Angle
这时的John Cena还是反派，但由于具有独特个性，很明显已经得到观众的认同，人气急升。在Survivor Series前转为正派，并加入Angle队。这时超过300磅的Rikishi已不算什么，因为他在Survivor Series成功用绝招FU对付500磅的BigShow，并取得最后胜利。可以说，转为正派的John Cena能令他更上一层楼,前途无可限量.
