如要提高一个人的英语阅读水平，就必须将泛读和精读结合起来。所谓泛读就是指广泛地涉猎各种不同的英语书籍，只要是适合自己英语水平的英语文字性的东西，都要拿来读一读，不限内容地浏览各种英语文字，包括小说，杂志，报纸，传记，诗歌，甚至幽默笑话等。英语语感和课外知识对于提高阅读理解能力都是至关重要的。
而当我们说起英语阅读中的精读，就不得不找一些方法来集中精力地提高阅读理解能力。阅读中的精读会帮助学习者复习旧知识；学习新知识；增加课外信息；同时，也会有效地提高阅读理解的整体能力，而不是一味毫无建树的“题海战术”。莱曼英语多年的实践证明，下列诸多环节必须在平时的阅读训练中予以高度的重视：
1.单词推理：
根据上下文推理文章中出现的新单词。在英语考核中，特别是阅读理解中，新单词量大约占百分之三至百分之六。这就需要学生在平时就要训练根据上下文推理新单词的含义。在训练中，尽量不要查阅字典，完全依赖于推理能力，就是我们常说的要会猜词。
2.逐句翻译
完成对单词的推理之后，就必须练习将整个的句子翻译成灵活的汉语，有助于对文章整体的把握。在这一步中，要求学生要有灵活的英译汉的能力，坚决反对按着英语单词去“磕”汉语。同时，在英译汉过程中，要求学生要有广博的课外知识，才能掌握各句乃至整篇文章的含义。
3.语法总结
在平时的训练中,还应对文章中所出现的语法内容进行学习和复习。无庸置疑，每篇阅读理解文章都是不错的学习资料，同时，文章所涉及的内容也应认真学习，它极有可能成为未来阅读理解内容，应该将其看作是丰富自己课外信息的宝贵机会。要倡导整体全面的学习，而不应为做题而做题。
4.自我创作
英语学习讲究的是综合系统的学习，而不能仅仅是单一的训练。当阅读理解文章中出现词组，句型以及习语时，学习者应该利用此机会进行自我的创作练习，从模仿，仿造他人的句子，逐渐形成自己的语言模式，也既英语的思维方式。
5.熟读全文
利用各种机会去朗读英语。永远牢记英语是读出来的，而不是做习题做会的。在朗读过程中，可按下列步骤训练：

6.广泛阅读
全面提高英语的阅读理解能力离不开广博的知识面。对任何文章的理解，都应以不同领域的知识为前提。唯有此前提才能帮助文章的阅读者全面地理解全文。可惜的是，大部分中国学生由于课业负担的繁重，无暇顾及广博的课外阅读，无形中增加了考试时阅读理解的难度。
总之，无论是英语作文，还是阅读理解都必须在大量的课外阅读的基础上，才能有明显的进步。此两项英语语言能力毫无任何捷径而言。

深夜，保姆觉得无聊就想去楼下看电视。但是她看不了，因为楼下没有电视（因为孩子的父母不希望他们的孩子看太多垃圾）。她就打电话给孩子的父母，问是否可以在他们的卧室看电视，当然孩子的父母同意了。
